Dental CE Requirements for Pennsylvania Dental Professionals

Dentists

Total hours required: 30 hours every two years

Mandatory Hours

  • 2 hours of Act 31 Mandated Child Abuse Reporter Training from an approved provider
  • 2 hours of Act 124 Opioid continuing education (only if you have a DEA registration)

Elective Hours

Elective hours: Remaining hours, with a maximum of 15 hours to be completed online or through individual study

Additional Requirement

All licensees are required to maintain at a minimum a current Healthcare Provider BLS/CPR or equivalent certification.

Restricted Faculty

Total hours required: 30 hours every two years

Mandatory Hours

  • Same as Dentists

Elective Hours

Elective hours: As per Dentists

Anesthesia – Unrestricted and Restricted I

Total hours required: 15 hours every two years

Mandatory Hours

  • 15 hours of Board-approved continuing education related to general anesthesia and deep sedation (Unrestricted)
  • 15 hours of Board-approved continuing education related to conscious sedation (Restricted I)

Additional Requirements

Current ACLS certification for adult patients and PALS for pediatric patients is required if utilizing certain sedation techniques.

Anesthesia – Restricted II

Total hours required: No continuing education requirement

Dental Hygienists

Total hours required: 20 hours every two years

Mandatory Hours

  • 2 hours of Act 31 Mandated Child Abuse Reporter Training from an approved provider

Elective Hours

Elective hours: Remaining hours, with a maximum of 10 hours to be completed online or through individual study

Dental Hygiene Local Anesthesia

Total hours required: 3 hours every two years

Mandatory Hours

  • 3 hours of Board-approved continuing education related to the administration of local anesthesia, including pharmacology

Public Health Dental Hygiene Practitioner

Total hours required: 5 hours every two years

Mandatory Hours

  • 5 hours of Board-approved continuing education in public health-related courses

Expanded Function Dental Assistant

Total hours required: 10 hours every two years

Mandatory Hours

  • 2 hours of Act 31 Mandated Child Abuse Reporter Training from an approved provider

Elective Hours

Elective hours: Remaining hours

Volunteer Dentist

Total hours required: 30 hours every two years

Mandatory Hours

  • Same as Dentists
