Dental CE Requirements for Minnesota Dental Professionals

Basic Requirements

Dentists & Dental Therapists:

  • Renewal Cycle: Biennial (every 2 years)
  • Required Hours: 50 hours
  • CPR Certification: Required, must be continuously maintained
  • Minimum Classroom Hours: No specific requirement
  • Specific Required Topics:
    • Infection control course every renewal cycle
    • Minimum of 2 courses in specific areas like recordkeeping, ethics, communication, etc.

Dental Hygienists & Licensed Dental Assistants:

  • Renewal Cycle: Biennial (every 2 years)
  • Required Hours: 25 hours
  • CPR Certification: Required, must be continuously maintained
  • Minimum Classroom Hours: No specific requirement
  • Specific Required Topics:
    • Infection control course every renewal cycle
    • Minimum of 2 courses in specific areas like recordkeeping, ethics, communication, etc.

Unique Information

Opioid Training:

  • One-time requirement for dentists who prescribe controlled substances
  • 3 x 1-hour courses provided by Board or Board-approved providers
  • Exemption possible for non-prescribers

Cultural Competency:

  • Encouraged but not mandatory, Board website offers resources
  • Online Courses: Accepted with specific interaction and assessment criteria
