Intraoral Radiography Certificate Program

Intraoral Radiography Certificate Program (Hybrid)
This course is designed for individuals who meet one of the following criteria and need dental radiography certification:

  • Currently working in a dental office
  • New to NC whose former state’s requirements do not meet NC requirements (may or may not be employed)
  • Students who have applied to dental school and/or plan to work in a dental office before entering dental school

This program is approved by the North Carolina State Dental Board Examiners (NCSDBE) pursuant to G.S. 90-29(c)(12).


Program Details

Part 1: Didactic (Online)

  • 22 hours of self-study designed to teach the fundamentals of x-ray production, safety, and protection.

Part 2: Clinical (Face-to-Face)

  • 8 hours (1 day) of hands-on clinical instruction focusing on receptor placement and exposure techniques for successful dental imaging.
  • Both parts must be completed to receive certification in Dental Radiography.
  • Note: Part 1 must be completed prior to registering for Part 2.

Total Contact Hours: 30 hours (Part 1 + Part 2).


Course Director

The ECU School of Dental Medicine is proud to welcome Ms. Tamara Stephenson, RDH, CDA as the Director of the Intraoral Radiography Certificate Course. Ms. Stephenson brings over 40 years of experience from private practice, Pitt County Health Department, Brody School of Medicine, and East Carolina School of Dental Medicine. She is also certified as a Public Health Dental Hygienist and Community Health Dental Coordinator.

Ms. Stephenson has been mentored by former director Ms. Madge Webster, BSRT, R, MAEd, whose contributions to developing this course have positively impacted dental providers across North Carolina. The ECU School of Dental Medicine acknowledges Ms. Webster’s exceptional work in advancing dental radiography education.
