Dental CE Requirements for Utah Dental Professionals

Dentists and Dental Hygienists

Total hours required: 30 hours every two years

Mandatory Hours

  • At least 2 hours must be in controlled substance prescribing classes.
  • CE must be relevant to the licensee's practice, presented by qualified individuals, and have a method to verify attendance.

Elective Hours

  • Up to 15 hours for internet or home study verified by an exam and certificate.
  • Up to 10 hours for teaching dental CE to others.
  • Up to 6 hours sponsored by the Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing.
  • Up to 3 hours for practice management courses.
  • Up to 4.5 hours for documented volunteer dental care treatment (1 hour of CE for 4 hours of volunteer dental care treatment).

Additional Notes

  • BCLS, ACLS, and PALS recertification hours do not count as CE.
  • CE records must be retained for 6 years.
  • Licensees may be excused from CE requirements for up to 3 years with proper documentation.
