Dental CE Requirements for West Virginia Dental Professionals
General CE Requirements
Total hours required: Dentists: 35 hours every two years; Dental Hygienists: 20 hours every two years.
Mandatory Hours
- General Supervision Permit: 3 CEUs in Office Emergencies.
- Public Health Permit: 3 CEUs each in Office Emergencies and Public Health Content.
- Infection Control or Substance Abuse or Tobacco Cessation or Occupational Hazards – 2 CEUs required in one area for all dental hygiene licenses.
- Health Care Provider CPR with hands-on practical required.
Elective Hours
Elective hours: Up to 80% of CE credits can be completed online. Remaining hours can include various clinical and non-clinical subjects relevant to dental practice.
Specific Requirements
- Drug Diversion Training and Best Practice Prescribing of Controlled Substances: 3 hours within one year of initial licensure for dentists.
- Continuing education must be offered by a board-approved provider, including ADA, AMA, and various dental associations.
Additional Points
- Courses on personal finance, estate planning, etc., are not approved for CE credits.
- The board may grant exemptions from CE requirements due to unusual circumstances or hardships.
- Licensees are required to maintain accurate records of completed CE courses for six years and may be audited by the board.
